HANDS-ON SCIENCE WORKSHOPS, Grades K-8

These workshops emphasize experiential learning to help students develop insight and understanding in life science, physical science, earth science and technology.

September, 2022 Grades K-2: Sept. 15-16; Grades 3-5: Sept. 21-23; Grades 6-8: Sept. 28-30

Life all Around us – students investigate Alaska habitats and the plants and animals that live within them. Learning objectives include living and non-living elements of ecosystems, food chains, webs and pyramids, renewable and non-renewable resources.

October, 2022 Grades K-2: Oct. 13-14; Grades 3-5: Oct. 19-21; Grades 6-8: Oct. 26-28

Go Go Go – this is a workshop about things (and organisms) that go fast. Students will learn about position, displacement, velocity and acceleration through engaging experiments using scale models and simulations.

November, 2022 Grades K-2: Nov. 10-11; Grades 3-5: Nov. 16-18; Grades 6-8: Nov. 30-Dec. 2

Wild Weather – This class will incorporate a study of weather and climatology. Students will learn how temperature, latitude and wind patterns work together to create seasonal and global weather patterns. They will also learn the circumstances that create extreme weather events.

February, 2023 Grades K-2: Feb. 2-3; Grades 3-5: Feb. 8-10; Grades 6-8: Feb. 15-17

Computers and technology. Students learn the fundamentals of computer programming by making interactive web-based games and programming robots.

March, 2023 Grades K-2: Mar. 2-3; Grades 3-5: Mar. 8-10; Grades 6-8: March 22-24

The Science of Stuff. This workshop will help students gain understanding properties of matter and changes that occur when different subtances are mixed, unmixed and combined in ways to produce completely different substances.

April, 2023 Grades K-2: Apr. 6-7; Grades 3-5: Apr. 12-14; Grades 6-8: Apr. 19-21

Materials and Design.
Students learn how materials are put together, used for diffrent purposes and how they can be improved and changed—and for achieving better results.
